Chickens are the smallest livestock animals in Banished. They can be raised by Herdsman in Pastures. They require only 6 squares each while Sheep take up 16 and Cows take up 20. They also breed faster than any of the other animals, allowing for rapid building and filling of pastures and mass slaughter when low on food followed by rapid population recovery for the next emergency. However, despite high population density and fast growth, each animal gives very little meat and eggs.
